Graphic Design Trends

What were some of the graphic design trends in 2017, and what will they be in 2018? Taking a look at the trends from last year can help you find your creative direction in 2018. According to Creative Market, in coming up with effective solutions, design professionals should review styles, formats of content and tools to focus on trends in the design industry.

Hand Drawn Illustration

The digital interpretation of the period between 1933 and 1965 is becoming popular, as designers are inspired by the past. It is thought that hand-drawn elements and images provide the human touch in a milieu of screens that dominate the world today.Black and white lettering is also trending, according to Greenwich Designs in London. The artisan approach is coming back, in a move from the more technical; reflected is a trend towards the integrity of design, such as found in handicrafts.

Mid-century is the term used to describe the flat colors and shape-centered illustration and colors of the past. You might think of the television shows of the 1950s and 1960s and their “modern” look.

Brands, such as Bulb, are seeking to simplify the complexity of their systems and create a distillation of information in as few letters as possible. Strategic thinking in packaging and branding, over superficial decoration, is the goal of East London’s B&B.

Packaging- Flat Graphics

The wine industry, as well as other food and beverage companies, have shown a trend towards a more simplified flat design technique. Single color label design is one present trend, as shown by Australia’s Fourth Wave in their design for the wine brand, Elephant in the Room.

Everything Old is New

There is an interest in the darker and black colors of the 80s and 90s, as television shows such as Stranger Things grasp the attention of many. Although bright colors which are bigger and bolder are now also trending, the use of moody filters has been added to a variety of images on screen and on paper. This is especially evident in the look of photography used in advertising during 2017 and 2018.

The Glitch is In

The photography images of the past that would have been thrown out, have become fashionable again. With a rising interest in horror films, corrupted images in graphic design are being used extensively in digital advertising.

The Color of Purple

Ultra Violet has been named 2018 Color of the Year by Pantone. Reflecting the recently expanding interest in space news and exploration, the deep purple with a blue hue is particularly in vogue this year.
